Electrocatalytic wastewater treatment: Electricity is supplied to the wastewater to thoroughly remove impurities.

2026-02-28

Electrocatalytic wastewater treatment, to put it simply, is a method that utilizes electricity to create something powerful in water to eliminate pollutants.

There are mainly two types of equipment: a rectifier and a reactor. The rectifier converts alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). The electricity coming into the factory cannot be used directly; it must first pass through the rectifier to be converted into DC before being sent to the reactor. The reactor is equipped with specially made electrode plates. Once the electricity is applied, the plates start to work.

How does it work?

Water is agitated on the surface of the electrode, generating something called hydroxyl radicals. Don’t worry about the name, just know that it has a very strong oxidizing ability. When it encounters dirt, it will attack it, breaking the molecular chains of those organic compounds, and finally breaking them down into carbon dioxide and water. That’s it. It’s not filtration, nor adsorption, but complete elimination.

This technology is primarily used for industrial wastewater, such as that discharged from pharmaceutical and chemical plants. Ordinary methods cannot handle the pollutants in that kind of water, and even bacteria die when exposed to it. Only this technology can do the job. The rectifier continuously supplies power, and the reactor keeps working. The water goes in, rotates once, and comes out clean.

The rectifier is just a labor-intensive component in the whole system, without any fancy work. It just keeps sending electricity out. The same goes for the electrode, which is constantly immersed in water and electrified, with substances growing on its surface to kill pollutants. The two work together.
